A GP antenna consists of a 1/4 wavelength vertical element and a 'ground' reflector, commonly used in handheld and mobile amateur radios due to its simplicity. However, its actual performance often deviates from theoretical values, especially at lower frequencies, mainly due to the lack of an effective ground plane. A sufficiently large ground plane is necessary to form a reflector image; otherwise, resonant frequency and impedance will differ significantly from theory. Connection of a large metal surface directly to the antenna's ground end is recommended.
