•Adverb 'never' has loaded weight 
•juxtaposition of 'shone' and 'chilled' to show contrast between fantasy and reality + suggests cold in their actions towards each other 
•Exclamation mark because of his incredulity and sense of injustice that they cannot be together. This is at odds with the previous lulling rhythm – another contradiction in the poem suggesting things are not as they should be.
