Front | Sonnet 116 x4(large) Does the speaker have an idealised view of love? |
---|---|
Back | •Contemporary no, true love is 'marriage of true minds' - platonic, noble sort of love. Matrimony language in 'admit impediments' - accepts there are faults. •Compelling imagery draws on manmade (lighthouse), natural imagery (star) shows love source protection and guidance => nautical and astronomical imagery •21st idealised; 'tempests' too violent, 'lighthouse' cannot guarantee survival, 'star' dead by time we see it + negative 'let me not' recognises counterargument, on point of admitting it. •Realistic & political poem extolling homosexual love - impediment preventing marriage is homosexuality. Also, phallic imagery of lighthouse - symbol of strong and defiant homosexual love. |
