(John Donne The Flea)
Back •Men usually wrote about women, not to them, so atypical in its direct address
•Although she remains silent, she is able to assert her presence
•Typical of the metaphysical poets, Donne uses a striking conceit
•A flea was a popular motif in erotic love poetry particular envied for its freedom around the female body
•Donne, typical of metaphysical poets, was interested in exploring the dualism of body and soul and the idea of bringing them together to achieve togetherness as a couple and togetherness with God => hence holy trinity image
•Their circumstances are shown not as those of promiscuity, such as found in Cavalier poetry, but of a couple engaged to be married in their ‘marriage bed’ and the implication that this love is forbidden ‘though parents grudge’ further suggests that the poem is not just about sexual love but a match where love is reciprocal and hard fought.
