The (mubtada) is normally definite if it is:

العَلَمُ (a proper noun), e.g., بلالٌ طالبٌ
اِسمُ الإشارَةِ (a demonstrative pronoun), e.g., هذا مسجد
ضمير (a pronoun), e.g., أنا مدرّسٌ
الإسمُ المَوْصُولُ (a relative pronoun), e.g., الَّذي يَعْبدُ غَيْرَ الله مُشْرِكٌ
a defenite article (al-), e.g., القُرآنُ كِتابُ اللهِ
مضاف إليه, e.g., مفتاحُ الجَنَّةِ الصلاةُ
