In addition to being the male equivalent of a woman, the word man has many meanings in English. Not long ago, man used to mean the same thing as people, as in humanity or mankind. Baseball teams want to get a man on base. Manning up is showing courage. Manning a business is providing workers for that business, including someone to man the phones.
