Front Why did Robert Peel set up the Metropolitan police?
Back In 1826, an economic downturn resulted in a crime wave and rioting which led to the army being called. The home secretary Peel thought it was better to have a centralised system for peacekeeping. The first Met police officers were set up in Septemeber 1829.
