the-sun
/ðə ˈsʌn/ /ðə ˈsʌn/
a British daily tabloid newspaper. It was first published in 1964 and has been owned by Rupert Murdoch since 1969. It is well known for its page-three girls and its stories about scandals (= things that people have done that are considered wrong and shocking). The phrase Sun readers is sometimes used to refer to people who hold right-wing opinions and have prejudices about women and people from other countries. Since 2012 there has been a Sunday edition of the newspaper, called The Sun on Sunday.
