They pretended not to notice us, turning their backs 180 degrees away from us, yet staying put for ten or fifteen minutes, occasionally peeping over their shoulders under the pretence of pointing out a colourful poster pinned above where we stood. On those courageous nights when we approach, these women in our orbit did not torpedo our advances with the equivalent force as distant others.
Back I use past tense then switch to present tense, confusing the reader
