Front why is this a correct use of commas?

Because Tashonda had learned to study by herself, she was able to pass the entrance exam.
Back because is a subordinating conjunction, and opening clauses with such must be offset by commas

note that the inverse is not true: "She was able to pass the entrace exam because..." (no comma)
