comment Conditionals are sentences with two clauses – an ‘if clause’ and a ‘main clause’ – that are closely related. There are different types of conditions. Some are possible or likely, others are unlikely or even impossible. For the test sentence ‘If I _______ (to see) her, I _______ (to give) her the book.’ we are given four variants of ANSWERS, but all include ‘will’ and ‘see’ in different combinations, therefore, this sentence expresses an imagined future situation (It is possible or likely that I will see her and give her the book.). When we talk about real and possible situations, we use the first conditional. In first conditional sentences, the structure is usually if + present simple (an imagined future situation) and will (or shall, should, would, can, could, may, might) + infinitive (a future result): If it’s a nice day tomorrow, we’ll go to the beach. Therefore, in the test we are to choose ANSWER 1: see/will give.
