Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary pen·tath·lon \\pen-ˈtath-lən, -ˌlän, ÷-ˈta-thə-\\ noun ETYMOLOGY Greek, from penta- + athlon contest DATE 1603 : an athletic contest involving participation by each contestant in five different events; especially : modern pentathlon English Etymology pentathlon 1852, from Gk. pentathlon, from pente "five" + athlon "prize, contest," of uncertain origin. Earlier in L. form pentathlum (1706). The Gk. version consisted of jumping, sprinting, discus and spear throwing, and wrestling. The modern version (1912) consists of horseback riding, fencing, shooting, swimming, and cross-country running.
