BOATS
A boat is smaller than
a ship. A liner is used to carry people for long distances
called voyages and a ferry is used to carry people and sometimes cars for
short distances called crossings. A ship that carries goods from one place to
another is a freighter. A large boat with sails is a yacht. Lifeboat has two meanings: it is a special boat that is used to
rescue people who are in danger at sea, or it is a small boat that is kept on a
ship and is used by people to escape if the ship is going to sink. A boat that
you move by rowing with oars is a rowing
boat (US rowboat).
The front of a boat is
the bow,
the back is the stern. When you are facing the front of a boat the
side on the right is called starboard, the side on the left is called port. The people who work on a boat are its crew. The person in command is the captain.
