A hi-fi or stereo is a machine used for listening to CDs, etc. When you want to listen to music, etc. you put a CD on. If you want to make the music louder, you turn the volume up. If you want to make it quieter, you turn it down. A small music player that you carry around with you is called an MP3 player or an iPod™.
