USING THE TELEPHONE
When
you call someone
or phone someone
(not to sb), his/her phone rings and he/she answers it. Sometimes the phone is engaged or there is no answer. You
might need to leave a message, either on an answering
machine, or with someone else:
Could you please ask her to call me back?
Introduce yourself by saying ‘ It's… ’ or ‘ This is… ’ (not Here
is .... If you phone someone by mistake, you can say:
‘I'm sorry, I've dialled the wrong
number.'.
The number that you dial before the telephone
number if you are telephoning a different area or country is called the code:
‘What's the code for Spain?’
When you finish speaking you put the phone down/hang up. You can use a
telephone line to send a copy of a letter, etc. using a fax machine.
