that are played outside on grass, like football, cricket
and rugby, are
played on a pitch. Some
other sports, for example tennis and basketball, are played on a court. Athletics is
made up of track events (sports that involve running on a track, such as sprinting and hurdling) and field events (sports
that involve jumping and throwing, such as the high jump and javelin). Sports that take place
on snow or ice, such as skiing, snowboarding and skating, are called winter
sports. Dangerous activities, such as bungee jumping, are
often called extreme sports.
A
person who trains people to compete in certain sports is a coach. The official person
who controls a match and makes
sure that players do not break the rules is a referee (in football, rugby, etc.) or an umpire (in tennis, cricket,
etc.).
