Text | The word "beam," in this podcast, means a long, straight piece of wood or metal used to support the wall or roof of a building: "The fire damaged the beams, and now the building may fall down." In gymnastics, a "balance beam" is a long, narrow, elevated bar that the athlete performs on: "Wow, she did three cartwheels in a row on the balance beam!"
