Episode Title | Showing Respect and Disrespect |
Phrase | dedication |
Text | The word "dedication," in this podcast, means commitment or the effort that one makes to do something, especially if it is difficult: "The company appreciates your dedication to the project, and we're going to raise your salary because of it." As a verb, "to dedicate (something) to (someone)" means to show that one has built, made, or written something to show respect to another person, or in another person's honor: "This song is dedicated to my mother." Or, "Have you decided who you're going to dedicate your book to?" A "dedication ceremony" is a special celebration when a new building is finished and it is named after someone: "The university is planning a dedication ceremony to name its library after the state's governor." |
