If someone's "heart sinks" or "spirits sink," that person starts to lose confidence or optimism: "Vicky's heart sank as the doctor told her his diagnosis." Finally, the phrase "to sink so low" means to be so selfish or cruel that one does something very bad: "Sheila never trusted Carl, yet she never expected him to sink so low as to cheat on his wife." |
