When talking about animals, "the pound" is an animal shelter or a place where animals are kept temporarily until their owners or a new owners can be found: "When they lost their dog, they called the pound and put up posters in their neighborhood." On a telephone keypad, the "pound" key is the key with a hashtag (#) symbol: "Please enter the extension you wish to dial, followed by the pound sign." Finally, as a verb, "to pound" means to hit something many times with one's fist: "Who could be pounding on the hotel room door in the middle of the night?" |
