Text In this podcast, the phrase "to scale" means with a constant (unchanging) ratio between the actual distance between points A and B and the distance between points A and B on a map: "It's difficult to illustrate the solar system to scale, because the distances between the planets are so large compared to the size of the planets themselves." When talking about animals, a "scale" is one of the flat, small pieces covering the skin of a snake or fish: "Look how colorful those fish scales are!"
