The phrase "trail of (something)" means a series or line of marks left by something that moved over the area: "The hurricane left a trail of destruction." Or, "The little boy left a trail of crumbs as he ate the cookie." Finally, the phrase "to be on the trail of (someone or something)" means to try to follow someone or something: "The hunters are on the trail of a fox." |
