Context - Dickens wrote ‘A Christmas Carol’ at the end of the industrial revolution.

There was widespread feelings at the time that poor people were poor because they were lazy or immoral so and that helping them would just result in more of this, hence the workhouses and prisons - malthusian economic theory.
