Das Kopfende meines Bettes stand nahe an der Thür, und im ersten Augenblick glaubte ich, daß dieser teuflische Lacher neben meinem Bette stehe – oder vielmehr auf meinem Kopfpolster krieche; aber ich stand auf, blickte umher und konnte nichts sehen; als ich noch ins Dunkel starrte, wiederholte sich der übernatürliche Laut, und ich wußte dann, daß er von der anderen Seite der Thür kam.

The head of my bed was near the door, and I thought at first the goblin-laugher stood at my bedside--or rather, crouched by my pillow: but I rose, looked round, and could see nothing; while, as I still gazed, the unnatural sound was reiterated: and I knew it came from behind the panels.
