Als ich St. John nach dieser Mitteilung zum erstenmal allein sah, war ich in großer Versuchung zu fragen, ob diese Begebenheit ihn unglücklich mache. Aber er schien der Sympathie so wenig zu bedürfen, daß ich weit entfernt davon, ihm mein Mitgefühl auszusprechen, im Gegenteil einige Beschämung empfand über das, was ich ihm bereits einmal bewiesen.

The first time I found St. John alone after this communication, I felt tempted to inquire if the event distressed him: but he seemed so little to need sympathy, that, so far from venturing to offer him more, I experienced some shame at the recollection of what I had already hazarded.
