Front | Describe the two examples - in mice and in mother's in Gambia - of environmental factors affecting epigenetics |
---|---|
Back | Mice: baby mice that are licked and groomed less by their mother causes the gene for the GR receptor protein to be methylated so the protein is not expressed so a stress hormone in the blood is not removed leading to high anxiety levels Gambia: Pregnant mother's have much better diets and higher levels of nutrient in their blood during the rainy season and the infants born when conceived at a time of nutritional well-being had more methylation in six of their genes - this shows a mother's diet can affect the epigenome of unborn babies (however, some people argue that when the ovum and sperm fuse, the epigenetic markers change to become totipotent stem cells so this must cancel any inherited epigenetics but it's debatable) |
