Duncan King Malcolm Lines Portrayed Stage Gentle Kindly

Text Duncan is often portrayed on stage as a gentle, kindly king. The language Shakespeare uses here - of reward and growth - reinforces this idea of a generous ruler. But in his decision to name Malcolm as his successor. Duncan also shows himself to be a clever and ruthless politician
In lines 22-7,Macbeth is publicly loyal of his king. In lines 48-53, however, he admits to himself that he must find a way to prevent Malcolm being appointed Duncan's heir. It is important to note that in Scotland at the time, kingship was not automatically inherited. This explains Macbeth's disappointment, especially given the Witches' prophecy.
