A lumbar puncture involves the needle traversing through several layers of tissue and meninges to reach the subarachnoid space containing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
A lumbar puncture needle passes through the skin, superficial fascia, supraspinous ligament, interspinous ligament, ligamentum flavum, epidural space, dura mater, arachnoid mater, and finally into the subarachnoid space containing CSF.
