Shock Toxic Syndrome Rash Infection S.Aureus  Produces Superantigen

Staphylococcus aureus' toxic shock syndrome toxin (TSST-1) can cause fever, shock, and desquamating rash in two settings: retained foreign bodies (nasal packing, tampons) or surgical wound infections.

S. aureusin toksemia-shokkioireyhtymätoksiini (TSST-1) voi aiheuttaa kuumetta, shokkia ja hilseilevää ihottumaa kahteen tilanteeseen: vieraiden esineiden (nenäpaikat, tamponit) käyttöön tai kirurgisten haavojen infektioihin.

Front S.aureus produces a superantigen, Toxic Shock Syndrome Toxin (TSST-1), which activates a large population of T lymphocytes by cross-linking MHC II and T-cell receptors

This results in a clinical triad of fever | shock | desquamating rash in what (2) settings?

Retained foreign body (nasal packing | tampon) or surgical wound infection → provide a rich nutrient source (blood) for bacteria → palmar | plantar desquamation is a hallmark feature of Staphylococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS) which occurs 2 weeks after onset → in acute setting, macular rash seen on palms, soles, and area surrounding infection
