Giardia trophozoites (pear-shaped trophozoite) colonize small gut → small bowel inflammation and villous atrophy (↓ absorptive capability) → trophozoites have four pairs of flagella and two nuclei which attach to epithelial cells in duodenal and jejunal crypts through a sucking disk on their ventral surface → trophozoites absorb nutrients from the host and cause inflammation | malabsorption
