The Hib vaccine is a conjugate vaccine of the capsule polysaccharide and a protein toxoid; nontypeable H. influenzae strains lack a capsule and cannot be vaccinated against.
The Hib vaccine consists of the cell wall polysaccharide (polyribosylribitol) conjugated to a diphtheria or tetanus protein toxoid. Nontypeable H. influenzae strains lack a capsule, preventing typing and vaccination.

Back | Hib vaccine ↓ Cell wall polysaccharide (polyribosylribitol) + Diphtheria or Tetanus protein toxoid Type is determined by the capsule so if strain has no capsule, strain cannot be "typed" ↓ Nontypeable H.influenzae doesn’t have a capsule and cannot be typed, hence not vaccinated against ↓ Hib vaccine made from typeable bug capsule will not protect against unencapsulated nontypeable H.influenzae strain |
