Weeks Bug N.Meningitidis Surgery Years Asplenics Vaccinated Organisms

Asplenic patients need to be vaccinated against S. pneumoniae, N. meningitidis, and H. influenzae (type b) due to their inability to fight encapsulated bacterial infections.

Management of asplenic patients

Immunization against 
S.pneumoniae
N.meningitidis
H.influenzae type B 

Elective surgery with vaccination 14 days prior
Emergency splenectomy 
13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine  (PCV13)
2 weeks after surgery 

23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23)
8 weeks after surgery

5 years later and at age 65→ revaccinate PPSV23

Meningococcal quadrivalent vaccine → once after 2 weeks and then every 5 years

Hib vaccine → once after 2 weeks

Inactivated influenza vaccination → Annually
