• anginosus, mitis, mutans, salivarus, bovis
• mostly alpha haemolytic (hence name), some gamma.
• commensals - colonize oropharynx, GIT, genitourinary tract
• opportunistic infections – sterile sites, immunocompromised

All Streptococci:
• Gram-positive cocci in chains
• Catalase negative
• Clear-grey-white, glistening, smooth, round colonies
• Fastidious media requirements
• Ferments carbohydrate to produce acid (hence LAB)
• Facultative anaerobes or capnophiles
