• 35-37 weeks pregnancy: mothers screened for colonization

• intrapartum IV antibiotics given:
― to colonized mothers
― to mother’s at risk e.g. preterm birth, fever, previous GBS 
― ensures protective levels of antibiotics in neonates
― penicillin or clindamycin/lincomycin if hypersensitive
― early 1990s 2 cases /1000 live births
― now 0.4 cases/1000 live births
