Idiom | Drop in the Bucket |
---|---|
Example | I've saved all month for a skateboard, but I still have only a drop in the bucket. |
Meaning | a very small, insignificant amount |
Origin | Sometimes this expression, which comes from the Bible (Isaiah 9:15), is "a drop in the ocean." It's easy to see that one little drop of water is close to nothing when compared with all the water in a bucket. In the same way, a small amount of anything is like a drop in the bucket when compared with the full amount that is needed or desired. |
