Idiom | Hit the Hay |
---|---|
Example | It's been a long day, and now it's time to hit the hay. |
Meaning | to go to bed |
Origin | This slang expression was first used by homeless people who traveled from place to place on foot in the United States in the 1930s. In those days wanderers asked for odd jobs, often begged for money, and were always looking for a place to spend the night. Sometimes they slept on a pile of hay in a field or barn. When their heads "hit the hay," they were probably so tired that they fell asleep quickly. Today, wherever you sleep or whatever you sleep on, when you go to bed, you're hitting the hay. |
