Origin | This popular expression was being used as early as the 1500s. It may refer to the fact that if you're cooking and you accidentally spill scalding water on yourself, you'll be in trouble. Or it could refer to the ancient custom of pouring a pot of boiling water on intruders as a way of chasing them off. In any case, hot water is definitely something you want to stay out of unless it's a bubble bath! |
