Je pense qu'il y avait quelques personnes dans la foule qui voulaient intervenir, mais l'apathie du témoin les a retenues assez longtemps pour qu'ils aient le temps de voir ce qu'on faisait, et ensuite ils étaient bien trop confus pour faire quoi que ce soit.

I think there were some people in the crowd who wanted to interfere at first, but bystander apathy held them off at least until they saw what we were doing, and then I think they were all too confused to do anything.
