Notes The past tense form is generally used to talk about events and states that took place prior to the time of speaking. The simple past tense is formed by adding -았/었- to the verb or adjective stem. The following general grammar rules apply:

-았- attaches to stems ending in 아 or 오;
-었- attaches to stems ending in a vowel other than 아 or 어;
-였- attaches to -하다, resulting in -하였어- → -했어-.
