Notes The -(으)ㄴ/는데 is the most widely used clause connective that has multiple usages and meanings generally corresponding to 'and', 'so' and 'but'.

-는데 attaches to verb stems; -(으)ㄴ데 follows adjective stems and the copula -이다. The connective can occur preceded by the past and the future tense markers. Resulting past -았/었는데 and future -겠는데, -(으)ㄹ 건데 forms are used with both verbs and adjectives. The -는데 form is used with 있다 and 없다.

The general function of -(으)ㄴ/는데 is to link a pair of logically connected clauses comprising a sentence. Here, the first clause marked by -(으)ㄴ/는데 contains background information. The meaning conveyed by the second clause can be additional, consequential or contradictory to the first clause's statement. -(으)ㄴ/는데 takes on the meaning of 'and', 'so', and 'but' respectively.
