Notes | In two-clause sentences 'A(으)려고 B', the B clause describes an action the subject undertakes in order to perform the intended/desired action expressed in the clause A. In other words, -(으)려(고) links the intention A with the means B aimed at its realization. Both -(으)려(고) and -(으)러 mark intentions in two-clause expressions. However, these two connectives cannot be used interchangeably in all cases. -(으)러 can only be used when followed by movement verbs, such as 가다, 오다, and 다니다. Expressions with -(으)려(고) allow any verb to occur in the second clause. Unlike -(으)러, the -(으)려(고) ending cannot be followed neither by a future tense clause nor by a clause expressing an imperative or a proposal. Finally, there are no limitations for verbs -(으)려(고) can attach to. Whereas -(으)러 cannot be used after verbs of movement. |
