Notes | The -지 ending attaches to adjective and verb stems. In its primary function (as the shared knowledge marker), the ending signals that the speaker believes that his message is true/correct and that the hearer agrees with the message. -지 can be preceded by tense markers and the honorific principle -(으)시-. The polite form -지요 can occur abbreviated to -죠 in speech and casual writing. -지 can be used to form tag questions ('isn't it?'). The ending can also soften up question sentences containing question words like 누구, 얼마 or 몇. In statements, -지 forms expressions of shared knowledge ('..., as you know', 'of course'), friendly first-person offers ('Let me ...'), and gentle imperatives ('How about ...'). The question ending -지(요)? corresponds to English tag questions 'isn't it?', 'right?', etc. Such questions request the hearer's confirmation. |
