아/어서 Marker Principle Marking Sequential Tense 늦잠을 자서

Front 늦잠을 자서 스쿨 버스를 놓쳤어요

Notes -아/어서 is a connective principle widely used in Korean. Its two general usages include marking the cause in cause-effect expressions (the consequential marker), and marking the sequence of two linked actions (the sequential marker).

In the sequential marker usage, -아/어서 can be further applied to describe the means of an action or to express a combined action.

-아/어서 attaches to verbs, adjectives and nouns. -(이)라서 is a very common and standard alternative of -이어서 used with nouns and 아니다. -아/어서 never occurs preceded by the tense markers (-았/었-, -겠-). The tense is expressed in the end of the second clause. -아/어서 can be used with honorific marker -(으)시-. The principle cannot be followed by the topic marker -은/는.
In majority of its usages, -아/어서 can be shortened to the slightly bookish form -아/어.
