Notes -(으)로 is a particle that attaches to nouns and has a host of meanings and usages.
In its primary instrumental meaning ('by’, ‘with’, ‘in'), the particle marks the means or method of performing an action.
-(으)로 may also mark the role or the capacity of a person ('as').
In certain cases, -(으)로 can be used to denote the reason of a negative event ('due to / because of').
The movement direction can be marked with -(으)로 ('toward').
The concept of a 'toward' direction markable by -(으)로 extends to cases when talking about exchanging something 'for' something or changing / transforming 'into' somebody / something.
The -로 form attaches to nouns ending in a vowel or ㄹ; -으로 comes after consonant-ending nouns. The particle can occur combined with other particles like -는 or -도.
