Notes | Less commonly, the -은/는 particle can be used to add emphasis to a specified piece of a sentence. In such case, -은/는 attaches to some connectives like -(으)니까 or -다가. In everyday speech, -은/는 sometimes shortens to ㄴ in cases like 난 (for 나는), and 이건 (for 이것은). While -은/는 can follow particles like -에(서) or -에게(서), it can never occur along with the subject (-이/가) or the object (-을/를) particles. The -은/는 particle cannot be used as a replacement for the -이/가 subject particle if the marked part represents information mentioned for the first time. An -은/는-marked part communicating old or trivial information can be dropped in casual speech. |
