았/었었 Past State 자넷은 고생 없이 지내 왔었어요

Back Janet used to be in the sun. (She is not anymore.)
Notes In some cases, the present state of affairs can be described by denoting its contrast with the past. -았/었었- provides the required sense of disconnection; something that used to happen in the past is clearly no longer applicable to the present. However, the usage of -았/었었- for marking significant changes is optional.
Do not use -았/었었- when talking about an action or a state that simply occurred or ended in the past → use the simple past marker -았/었- instead.
