Pattern Hope Addition Meaning Past 았/었)으면 좋겠 자네는

Front 자네는 해고되었으니 다시는 이곳에 나타나지 않았으면 좋겠네!
Back You are fired and no longer wanted around here!
Notes The core pattern -(으)면 좋다 (literally 'it would be good if ...') attaches to adjective and verb stems. It is primarily used in expressions of hope or wish where it corresponds to 'I wish/hope ...'. The addition of other principles modifies the primary meaning to match the connotation.

When a wish or hope is related to the past situation or to a far-fetched future state of affairs, the -았/었으면 좋- version with the past tense modifier is used.

The addition of -겠- in -(았/었)으면 좋겠- makes the wish more emphatic.

-(았/었)으면 좋겠- also takes on the meaning of 'shall' (for example, in some questions); the pattern can be used in indirect obligations.
