Principle 으/느냐 Question Quoting 느냐고 나는 댄에게 애인이

Front 나는 댄에게 애인이 왜 없(느)냐고 물어봤더니 갑자가 나를 키스했어요
Back I asked Dane why he didn't have a boyfriend and he suddenly kissed me
Notes The -으/느냐 plain style question ending is used when quoting questions indirectly. The -으냐고 quoting principle attaches to adjective stems; -느냐고 follows verb stems. -느냐고 follows stems with the past, future -겠- tense markers, and the honorific principle -(으)시-.

In colloquial speech and often in modern writing, the short version -냐고 (with dropped -느/으) is commonly used. However, the less used full -으/느냐 quoted question principle is regarded as standard in written Korean.
