| Front | Contracted Indirect Quotation Forms |
|---|---|
| Notes | The full indirect quotation forms usually occur abbreviated in colloquial speech. There are two kinds of contracted quotation forms. The first is obtained by dropping the quoting verb: -(ㄴ/는)다고(요), -이라고(요) for statements; -냐고(요) for questions; -자고(요) for proposals/suggestions; and, -(으)라고(요), -달라고(요) for commands or requests. These endings are commonly used in daily conversations when repeating something to get heard, when boasting or when repeating someone's words to express a different opinion. The second kind of contracted quotation forms is obtained through further reduction of the original full forms: -(ㄴ/는)대(요), -이래(요) for statements; -냬(요) for questions; -재(요) for proposals/suggestions; and, -(으)래(요), -달래(요) for commands or requests. |
