Notes In situations when a desired or the most appropriate option is not available, -(이)나 is used to mark the second-best choice. In such usage, -(이)나 takes on the meaning similar to 'or something' in English.

The most typical use cases include situations when the speaker recommends or proposes doing something that is considered to be the second-best option in given circumstances. Structures with -(이)나 in its 'or something' usage sound natural when followed by expressions of one's intention or will. Verbs in the past tense cannot be used after -(이)나.

When used with nouns describing time, the -에나 form must be used (without omitting -에). Both -에나 or -(이)나 can be used with nouns describing a place. The -기나 form can follow verb stems.
